Parker joins anti-poverty effort in Cambodia RDI’s efforts are divided into four areas: community development, laboratory and research, health and sanitation, and media. The primary project on the trip included establishing a medical clinic for a population of 1,000 Khmer people on a remote island in the Mekong River. Parker and her team worked on the island for a week, interacting with the villagers and setting up a clinic. During the stay in Cambodia, the team also conducted well testing in other villages and worked on water purification projects, based out of the RDI compound near Phnom Penh.
The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country of nearly 14.9 million people, located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The Vietnam conflict extended into and ravaged Cambodia’s borders in the 1960’s. Cambodians then suffered under the regime of the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, resulting in mass execution of its people and the 1975 forced evacuation from the country’s capital, Phnom Penh, into rural, undeveloped areas. It is estimated that over 2 million Cambodians perished during this period of unrest. Cambodia, with a relatively new government in place, is rebuilding its workforce, schools, and economy after years of conflict. RDI’s purpose is to help the Cambodian people in that effort by combining technology, research, and education to develop jobs, clean water, better health, and sanitation for the Cambodian people.
