AHMCP legal counsel for Hoosier Honor Flights The current priority of Hoosier Honor Flights is to transport veterans of World War II to see the WWII Memorial, which opened in 2005. Three Honor Flights have taken place since the nonprofit corporation was formed in 2008 with the assistance of AHMCP Attorney Michael Carmin, retired Colonel, United States Army Reserves. Hoosier Honor Flight is a part of the national Honor Flights Network. In November, 2008, 40 veterans flew a commercial airline out of Indianapolis International Airport to Washington, DC, in the first successful Hoosier Honor Flight trip to the nation’s capital. On April 22, 2009, the Honor Flight volunteers, again led by Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel John Tilford, chartered a Boeing 747 to fly from the Monroe County Airport. One hundred twelve veterans traveled to Washington, DC, for the day. All but two were veterans of WWII. The nonprofit corporation received over $67,000 in donations with the assistance of countless businesses and individuals, including AHMCP, to make the trip possible. American Legion Post 18, AMVETS Post 2000, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 604, Operation Military Appreciation Day, Indiana National Guard Family Readiness Group, and the I.U. Air Force ROTC all stepped up to help organize and fund this memorable trip. For many of the WWII vets, their journey began over 68 years ago when they accepted their duty to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” and left U.S. soil to enter into different avenues of military service on different continents. Most of the heroes had never seen the new WWII memorial, dedicated to honor and remember their courageous service. Upon arriving on April 22nd, the veterans were greeted by Air Force Maj. General Ralph Jodice from Andrews Air Force base and were honored by many active airmen and women and Marines, who all formed a long line at the airport curb with Maj. Gen. Jodice—at attention and salute—as the buses departed the airport to travel to the Memorial. The heroes were personally and warmly welcomed to the WWII memorial by Senator Bob Dole. The buses left the Memorial and circled the Marine Memorial, honoring the Marines that raised the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima, which some of the Hoosier veterans had witnessed 64 years earlier. The group toured Arlington National Cemetery, which included the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. It was a memorable day for the veterans and for the Guardians that assisted them, including AHMCP Attorney Angela Parker, an Honor Flight volunteer and a director of the Hoosier Honor Flight corporation’s Board. On October 21, 2009, 36 veterans, including two female veterans of World War II, flew to Washington, DC, on the third Honor Flight from our area. A fourth Honor Flight is slated for April, 2010. |
